Arachnis the Spider Orchid (I) September 14, 2009 at 4:37 pm
While the name Vanda has become so well known in the world of flowers as to be almost synonymous with an Orchid, this is not true of the genus Arachnis. This is partly because there are fewer native species, and moreover confined to Malaysia, and Java and Borneo in Indonesia, and partly because of the confusion of nomenclature. Originally the popular name was the Scorpion Orchid, in reference no doubt to the way in which the lower petals curve inwards, but botanically it was named Arachnis from the Greek word ‘arachne’ or spider, Which in shape it could also be said to resemble? Logically, therefore, preference should be given to the name Spider Orchid.
Furthermore, one of the chief species was given two names at various times; A. moschifera (musk bearing) referring to the rather elusive musky scent coming from the tip of the erect dorsal sepal, or A, flos-aeris meaning ‘flower of the air’ alluding to the waving, branching stems. Botanically it is more correct to use the latter, though alas, whichever name we use; it has now become almost extinct.
Fortunately one variety deservedly survives, both in the Singapore Botanic Garden and in Mandai Garden, flos-aeris, this orchid originating from north Sumatra has the distinction of being known as the ‘Black’ orchid, the petals and sepals appearing almost black in shady conditions, but in reality being a deep chocolate brown, the pure white column or ‘nose’ standing out in exciting contrast.
