Oriental furniture 2According to Mrs. Pauline, who owns Pauline Galleries in Cold Storage, the most important piece of furniture in a household for the ancient Chinese was the bed because their lives revolved round it. Beds were originally in the form of elevated platforms or brick structures called “Kang” with a heating system of flues conveying warmth from the kitchen fires. The bed is often the only piece of furniture in the home on which the whole family sleeps, eats, sews, relaxes and entertains. She added that chairs were not a Chinese concept and gained acceptance only in the 12th century—the women especially would rather use beds in their private quarters rather than chairs.

For resting, people used stools made of wood or bamboo and in later periods, of porcelain. Furniture for storage included cupboards, bookcases and chests. Wardrobes were made in pairs and often placed side by side. They came in two parts, the upper reserved for headgear. Clothes were not hung but folded and placed on shelves resting on bars attached to the side panels. Though basically not items of furniture’, screens also played an important role in providing privacy to the ancient Chinese. The early screens were made with panels of crude glass. In later years, frames were carved, inlaid with jade and other precious stones or painted. Silk screens also became popular and were painted with birds and animals, pictures of sages and quotations from their writings.
